Energy efficiency rating

When you buy a property, you usually don't just look at the purchase price but also at other factors. Particularly in times of rising energy prices, the energy efficiency of a building plays an increasingly pivotal role for buyers — in other words, how high the energy demand or consumption of the house is. This is assessed on the energy certificate through energy efficiency ratings.

In Germany, energy efficiency ratings for buildings range from A+ to H, with A+ being the best and H the worst. This can be easily recognized by the color of the scale on the energy certificate (green to red).

Energy efficiency ratingFinal energy consumption
A+< 30 kWh/(m²a)
A30-50 kWh/(m²a)
B50-75 kWh/(m²a)
C75-100 kWh/(m²a)
D100-130 kWh/(m²a)
E130-160 kWh/(m²a)
F160-200 kWh/(m²a)
G200-250 kWh/(m²a)
H> 250 kWh/(m²a)
