Building application

The building application is a form that you must send to your local authority before you can build, extend or demolish a building. Even if you want to change the intended use of a building, you often need explicit permission to do so. This is to prevent people from building on a whim.

In addition to the application, a few other documents must also be submitted for the application:

  • the site plan

  • the construction drawing

  • the description of the building including technical details

  • the calculation of living and usable area

  • information on development, water supply and drainage

  • fire protection, heat protection and statics certificates and the like

  • and more

You can obtain the building application from your local building authority. However, the application may only be submitted by a person authorized to submit building documents (e.g. property developers, architects, civil engineers, etc.). They will also ensure that the above-mentioned documents are all correct and complete.
